Stories
are how we make sense of our lives and find common ground.
That's why I believe stories are important. More to the point,
that's why I do what I do, which is write them.
My
favorite examples of my own writing recall the easygoing "storytelling on the porch" style of the American South. Now, mind:
the tales told are in keeping with the accepted standards of
journalism. I approach my subjects honestly, I give all sides
their say, and I leave it up to the reader to decide what they find
in the story.
I've written
hundreds of articles for national, regional, and trade publications on
subjects ranging from travel
and cuisine to social justice and public health.
What I
can do for you, should you be an editor in search of a writer,
is this, above all else: leave images lingering in the mind of
your readers. That's a lesson I learned from being a reader
myself. When images from a story linger in our minds, we just
have to return for more.
